So I received an email today from a guy in this band called Heartthrob out of the L.A. area, and decided to check ‘em out and write a review…
I wasn’t told really what genre this might be in, and with a name like Heartthrob it kinda leaves it open to any possibilties. But big punkrock points to these dudes for playin’ some straight up hardcore punk with that band name. awesome.
Influenced primarily I suppose, by bands like septic death (pusheads crust/sludgy/hardcore band), charles bronson (sxe powerviolence band) amongst a couple others. I don’t know if this album was recorded in a studio, garage, or what have you, but the production is quite good. Vocals are loud and clear, definitely pissed off as fuck. Grinding Guitars and bass, and decent, clear drums (drums got quite a bit of cool intricate little fills, etc). Most of what I heard is midtempo, way crunchy (with some varying time changes), and definitely heavy on the angry vox. Obviously (considering my site’s name, and my world view) my favorite track would have to be “the glass is half empty”, which happens to be a pretty badass little jingle. In true Hardcore style, most of the tracks are about just over a minute, which is how it should be. short and sweet.
If you’re into more catchy punk with happy little sing along choruses, or anything british, this might not be your cup of tea. These tunes are heavy, rhythm driven, and violent. Definitely a cd I would throw on while working out or put into my cd player on the way back from a barfight or something. Here’s a link to their page, check ‘em
